Local Club’s Generosity Drives Support for Carson Tahoe Cancer Center

Donations play a crucial role in ensuring the success of vital programs, such as those offered by the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center. From patient care to cutting-edge treatments, community support is essential in funding these initiatives and helping individuals navigate their cancer journey with dignity and strength. One recent example of heartfelt local support came from the Thursday Night Cruisers, a classic car club with a passion for driving—and giving back.

The Thursday Night Cruisers, started by Mary and Bill Bowers over a decade ago, is a vibrant community of people who share a love for classic vehicles. Every Thursday evening, from late May until just before Hot August Nights, this group gathers to showcase their cherished cars. What makes this group stand out, beyond their appreciation for automotive history, is their commitment to making a difference in the community. With 125 members on their email list, the Thursday Night Cruisers operate without dues or fees, purely fueled by the joy of driving and supporting good causes.

Recently, the group made a generous donation to the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center, specifically to the Cancer Resource Center. We sat down with the Thursday Night Cruisers to learn more about their inspiration for this meaningful contribution.

Q: Can you tell us about the Thursday Night Cruisers and how the group got started?

It was started about 10 years ago by Mary and Bill Bowers. We are a group of people who enjoy driving and showing our classic vehicles every Thursday evening from late May until the Thursday before Hot August Nights. We do not have dues or other fees in our group. At the present time, there are 125 people listed on our email list.

Q: What inspired the group to support the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center with your recent donation?

We have several members who have been the beneficiaries of your service, and they suggested that the cancer center’s resource center would be a great place to donate our final 50/50 amount.

Q: Why is cancer awareness and patient support important to your group?

I imagine it’s because most of us are older and have had close family, friends, or ourselves who have suffered from the disease.

Q: Can you share details about how your group raised the funds for the donation?

Every Thursday evening from late May until the end of July, we have raffles for great prizes donated by the wonderful businesses in Carson City. At the end of each evening’s gathering, we draw one lucky ticket to win half of the evening’s raffle ticket purchases. 50% of that amount goes to the winner of the drawing, while the other half collects throughout the season.

Their heartfelt donation is a reminder of how much community support matters. For Carson Tahoe Health, donations like these allow us to continue providing comprehensive cancer care, support services, and vital resources for those battling cancer. The generosity of groups like the Thursday Night Cruisers ensures that we can offer hope, strength, and healing to our patients.
