Pets Can Make A Paws-itive Difference | Carson Tahoe Health

Opening your home to a pet, especially those from shelters, can do more than just give you a loyal companion who is always happy to see you. Taking care of a pet is not only good for the animal’s health, but the human family members’ health, as well.

Studies have shown that being a pet parent is linked to many health benefits, including:

  • Decreased blood pressure
  • Lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels
  • Less anxiety and feelings of loneliness
  • Reduced symptoms of PTSD
  • Better brain function in older adults

Having a furry family member can also open up more opportunities for exercising and socializing, which in turn is good for your physical and mental health.

Your pet has many of the same needs as you do. Just as people need good nutrition and physical activity to stay healthy, so do animals.

Here are some tips for taking care of your fur babies:

  • Feed them high-quality food and make sure you are using the correct portion sizes for your pet’s size and age.
  • Give your pet regular exercise. Taking your dog for a daily walk is a great way for you to get daily activity, as well.
  • Make sure your pet has a clean, warm place to sleep and rest, such as a dog crate with a comfortable pet bed inside.
  • Give your pet access to fun, safe toys, including chew toys. This is good for their teeth and can help reduce boredom.
  • Take your pet to the veterinarian for regular checkups and when you notice any concerning health symptoms.
