Each April, communities across the country come together to recognize National Donate Life Month. It’s a time to honor the generosity of organ, eye, and tissue donors and to raise awareness about the life-saving impact of donation.
At Carson Tahoe Health, that recognition took center stage on April 9. Staff, community members, and partners gathered at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center for a Donate Life flag-raising ceremony in partnership with Donor Network West.
As the Donate Life flag was raised, it stood as a powerful symbol of hope, generosity, and lasting legacy. It honors those who have given the gift of life. The flag will remain on display throughout April, serving as a visible reminder of the lives touched through donation.
Honoring Lives, Inspiring Hope
This year’s National Donate Life Month theme, “Leave a Legacy,” reflects the profound and lasting impact one decision can make. Organ, eye, and tissue donation not only saves lives. It also connects donors, recipients, and families in a shared story of compassion and hope.
During the ceremony, speakers from Carson Tahoe Health, Donor Network West, and the Donate Life Ambassador program shared meaningful reflections on the importance of donation and the lives forever changed through these selfless acts.
In addition to the flag display, Carson Tahoe Health is honoring donors in a more intimate setting. Throughout April, luminaries are displayed in the chapel, creating a quiet space for reflection and remembrance. The display includes five luminaries representing organ donors from 2025, each one symbolizing a life and the extraordinary gift they gave to others. Designed to be simple, respectful, and meaningful, the luminaries serve as a powerful visual tribute—honoring each donor and the lasting impact of their legacy.
The Need for Donation
The need for organ and tissue donation remains critical.
- Approximately 700 Nevadans are currently waiting for a life-saving transplant
- More than 100,000 people nationwide are on the transplant waiting list
- 17 people die each day while waiting for a transplant
One organ donor can save up to eight lives and impact more than 75 others through tissue donation—highlighting the extraordinary difference a single decision can make.
A Continued Commitment
Carson Tahoe Health remains committed to supporting this life-saving work through its ongoing partnership with Donor Network West. Together, they continue to educate the community, support donor families, and inspire individuals to consider registering as organ and tissue donors.
Throughout April, the Donate Life flag and chapel luminary display serve as meaningful reminders of what’s possible when compassion meets action—and how each of us has the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy.
