Carson Tahoe Health Celebrates 300 WATCHMAN Procedures

Dr. Turner, Kaitlyn Michitarian

Carson Tahoe Health is proud to celebrate the completion of its 300th WATCHMAN procedure, marking an important milestone in advanced stroke prevention care for patients throughout Carson City and Northern Nevada.

This achievement reflects the expertise, dedication and collaboration of Carson Tahoe’s Cardiovascular team. More importantly, it represents 300 procedures designed to help patients reduce their risk of stroke and move forward with greater confidence in their health.

An Alternative for Certain Patients With AFib

The WATCHMAN device is a permanent implant designed for certain patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, commonly known as AFib, who need an alternative to long-term oral anticoagulation therapy.

For patients with AFib, blood can collect in an area of the heart called the left atrial appendage, where clots may form and potentially travel to the brain. The WATCHMAN device closes this area of the heart to help reduce the risk of stroke.

The WATCHMAN device has given many people in our community the opportunity to remain protected from stroke without the need for long-term anticoagulation,” said Dr. Turner. “I am incredibly appreciative of Carson Tahoe Health for its support and of our entire team for its commitment to this goal. I would especially like to recognize our program coordinator, Kaitlyn Michitarian, whose contributions have been instrumental in helping us reach this milestone and continue moving the program forward.”

Advancing Care Through Concomitant Procedures

The WATCHMAN program at Carson Tahoe Health has continued to grow in both volume and capability. This includes the successful implementation of concomitant procedures, which allow eligible patients to undergo WATCHMAN implantation alongside an ablation in a singular procedure.

When clinically appropriate, this coordinated approach can create a more seamless and convenient experience for patients by combining treatments into one procedure and one episode of care.

Reaching 300 procedures demonstrates more than the growth of a cardiovascular program. It reflects a continued investment in innovative treatment options that allow patients to receive advanced heart care close to home.

A Milestone Made Possible by a Dedicated Team

Every WATCHMAN procedure requires close collaboration among physicians, nurses, cardiovascular technicians, imaging professionals, anesthesiology teams, program coordinators and other clinical support staff.

Their shared expertise helps guide patients through each stage of care, from the initial evaluation and procedure through recovery and follow-up.

Carson Tahoe Health extends its gratitude to every team member who helped make this milestone possible, as well as to the patients and families who placed their trust in our care.

As the WATCHMAN program continues to grow, Carson Tahoe Health remains committed to expanding access to advanced cardiovascular treatments, improving outcomes and providing innovative, patient-centered care for the Northern Nevada community.
