Compassion is expressed in many ways at Carson Tahoe Health. Sometimes, it arrives on four paws.
On September 30, Hiro received a 2026 Nevada Hospital Association Honorable Mention Award following his nomination for Volunteer of the Year. The recognition honors his service as a certified therapy dog and the difference he makes for patients, families, and team members.
For the past year, Hiro has volunteered nearly every day alongside his handler, Scott Mattes, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. Their visits have become a familiar part of life at Carson Tahoe, bringing a personal connection to the healthcare experience.
A Reassuring Presence During Uncertainty
One experience described in Hiro’s nomination captures the significance of his work.
When unexpected complications arose during a procedure in the cardiac catheterization lab, a patient’s spouse and daughter waited in the lobby for news. Scott brought Hiro to join them, and he settled between the two family members, offering companionship until the provider arrived with a positive update.
The moment illustrated how volunteer support can extend beyond the patient to the people who love them.
Hiro also visits Carson Tahoe’s Behavioral Health Services, where his gentle demeanor offers patients a reassuring presence during difficult moments.
Supporting the Team Behind the Care
For employees, Hiro’s visits provide an opportunity to pause, connect, and recharge amid the demands of their work.
Dr. Jack of Carson Tahoe Health’s Emergency Department described that impact:
In the chaos of the ER, Hiro brings what medicine alone cannot—comfort, calm, and a reminder that compassion is one of the strongest forms of healing. Hiro doesn’t just visit our emergency department—he changes it.”
Scott has seen that response throughout the organization, where Hiro is regularly greeted by name and welcomed into departments.
When I finally decided to get Hiro certified as a therapy dog, I had no idea of the true impact it would have,” Scott shared. “I knew it was going to be a good thing for CTH and our patients, but, WOW, I had no idea just how good.”
Recognition for Everyday Service
Hiro’s award celebrates the value of showing up consistently and meeting people where they are. His contribution is built through daily visits, familiar greetings, and the relationships he has formed across Carson Tahoe.
Known for his friendly spirit and love of bell peppers, Hiro has become a beloved member of the Carson Tahoe community. This recognition is a fitting tribute to his service and to the partnership with Scott that makes it possible.
Congratulations to Hiro and Scott on this well-deserved honor, and thank you for making kindness part of the everyday experience at Carson Tahoe Health.
