The Joint Commission’s Unexpected Complications in Term Newborns measure evaluates outcomes among full-term newborns who had no identified preexisting conditions.
The measure includes unexpected moderate or severe complications such as significant respiratory concerns, serious infections, birth injuries, neurologic complications, an extended hospital stay, or transfer to another hospital for a higher level of care. Because a lower rate indicates fewer unexpected complications, the measure provides one important way to evaluate newborn outcomes across hospitals.
While no single statistic can predict an individual birth experience, Carson Tahoe’s 1.1% rate demonstrates a strong record of care for healthy, full-term newborns delivered at the hospital in 2025.
