Going the Extra Mile: Karissa Carl, DAISY Award Winner, Exemplifies Compassionate Care

We are proud to celebrate Karissa Carl from Medical Oncology as a DAISY Award Winner for her extraordinary compassion and dedication to patient care.

Karissa’s recent act of kindness truly embodies the spirit of nursing. While caring for a patient on Med/One who was homeless and struggling with severe foot wounds, Karissa noticed he didn’t have proper clothing or shoes, especially troubling with cold weather setting in. The patient had also shared that he planned to attend job interviews after discharge, making his need for appropriate attire even more urgent.

Karissa immediately acted. After checking the clothing donation closet and finding no shoes in his size, she didn’t stop there. That evening, after her shift, she went to Walmart and personally purchased shoes, clothes, and even a professional outfit to ensure the patient would be warm, comfortable, and confident when pursuing employment.

The patient was deeply touched, saying, “I didn’t have shoes or clothes, so she decided to get them for me. She’s a very, very kind person. I feel really special because of her help. I was very lucky to have her as a nurse. She is a very special person.”

Karissa’s selfless actions went far beyond medical care, they restored dignity and offered hope. Her commitment to holistic healing is a shining example of what it means to serve with heart.

Congratulations, Karissa, and thank you for making a lasting difference in the lives of your patients.
