The weather outside might be frightful, but Valentine’s Day is on its way and cupid knows no limits when it comes to the cold. If you’re looking for something sweet to do with that special person or even a group of friends, grab a pair of snowshoes and enjoy some of the spectacular views in your own back yard. The best news yet: those beautiful views are completely free and hiking through the snow will have you feeling warm in no time.

As residents of Northern Nevada and California, the scenic options are limitless. A hike near Mount Rose, a traipse around Lake Tahoe or even an Everest-style excursion  are all sure fire ways to make your sweetheart  and your heart (It’s cheesy we know, but it’s Heart Month after all.) smile. Click here for hiking information, maps and more.

Don’t own snowshoes? No problem! There are several snow equipment rental businesses in the area that have daily snowshoe rentals at an affordable price.

Wondering what to bring?

• Hat
• Gloves
• Warm clothing
• Boots
• Snowshoes (rented or purchased)
• Ski poles or walking stick (Optional, but they sure help with the hike.)
• Maps
• Camera
• Plenty of water
• Snacks
• A thermos full of hot chocolate
• Someone special
• Your spirit of adventure

We don’t want to cramp your adventurous style, but it’s always a good idea to carry a Winter Survival Kit with you. And don’t forget to tell someone where you’re going and when they should expect you to be back.

Now that you’re packed, prepared and ready to go, embrace that blustery winter weather and make some Valentine’s Day memories.
